A Taste of Olympic History

Over 2,700 years ago, in the sun-drenched region of Olympia, south-west Greece, the ancient Olympic Games were born. This wasn’t just any sporting event – it was a massive festival thrown in honour of Zeus, king of the gods. It has even been theorised that the name “Olympics” actually comes from Mount Olympus, where the gods were said to live. Every four years, athletes from all over the Greek world gathered to show off their skills and compete for the ultimate prize: a wreath of olive leaves and eternal glory.

Fun Facts to Fuel Your Olympic Spirit:

  1. Crowning Glory: Forget gold medals! Winners in the ancient Olympics received a wreath of olive leaves to wear as a crown, as a symbol of peace and victory. It was like wearing a badge of honor, signifying their status as a champion.

  2. Slippery Situation: Ever tried wrestling someone covered in olive oil? That’s how the ancient Greeks did it! It made the sport extra challenging and, probably, pretty messy.

  3. From Kitchen to Competition: The first ever recorded winner of an Olympic game was Coroebus of Elis, a cook! He won the sprint race in 776 BC, proving that chefs truly are the champions.

  4. Food Fit for Champions: Athletes needed to fuel their bodies for competition, and the ancient Greeks had a diet rich in olives, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Sounds like a typical meal at The Real Greek!

  5. Victory Feast: Winning an Olympic event wasn’t just about glory – it was about celebrating with loved ones. After the games, huge feasts were held for winners and their families, filled with delicious food and plenty of revelry.
